Our projects and activities:

  • 2008 - 2009: Within the 18 month-project Invasive Alien Species - an Overlooked Threat (Project Thuja), several activities will be organized. We aim to raise public awareness on the problem of alien species in Slovenia. The project is carried out with partner organizations Botanical Society of Slovenia, Tourist Society Boštanj and Society Akvaviva and is financially supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Financial Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. In the framework of the project a large web site  on alien species has been created (in Slovenian): www.tujerodne-vrste.info


  • 2008 - 2009: Zavod Symbiosis carries out project Increasing public support for amphibian conservation, which consists of several activities. In August 2008 the second edition of the publication "Amphibians of Slovenia - an identification guide" will be published. For further information see publications. In October 2008 we will restore three ponds in Loška valley. These ponds are among the few standing waters in the area and are important habitats for amphibians. In 2009 we will organize surveys of amphibians and reptiles in Loška valley and on Bloke plateau, as well as excursions for local inhabitants. In cooperation with touristic society Boštanj we will organize saving of amphibians from road traffic in protected area Radensko polje. These activities are part of the program of work of Zavod Symbiosis and are financially supported by the Slovene Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, the Nature Conservation Fund of the Dutch Society of Zoo's and Dutch Foundation for the Advancement of Herpetology. 


  • 2008: Survey of the threatened endemic bush cricket Zeuneriana marmorata in Ljubljansko barje. This activity is part of the program of work of Zavod Symbiosis which is partly financed by the Slovene Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning. The survey is financeally supported by a grant of the Nature Conservation Fund of the Dutch Society of Zoo's. 


  • 2006 - 2008: Zavod Symbiosis is partner in the project DinaRis of society Dinaricum. More information on the website of project DinaRis


  • 2003 - ongoing: Carrying out and coordinating biological parts of environmental impact assessments.


  • 2005 - ongoing: Monitoring of mitigation measures for amphibians during and after construction of highways.


  • 2003 - ongoing: Preparation of scientific illustrations for various magazines, journals, field guides and books. >> more information

  • 2006 - 2008: Zavod Symbiosis is subcontractor of Centre for Cartography of Fauna and Flora in the project "Additional research of Natura 2000 qualification species with proposal for monitoring - crayfish".


  • 2005 - 2006: Preparing basis for management of Natura 2000 areas in Slovenia.


  • 2004 - 2005: Project "Conservation of amphibians in Notranjska Regional Park". the project combined education, awareness raising and research activities. It was financially supported by the KNIP-MATRA program of the Royal Dutch Embassy in Slovenia.


  • 2003 - 2006: Survey of amphibians in Triglav National Park, with special attention to endemic forms of the Alpine newt (Mesotriton alpestris). The project was financially supported by a grant from the Van Tienhoven Foundation for International Nature Protection.


  •  2003 - 2006: Cooperating in the project: National capacity self-assessment for global environmental management - NCSA project. In the framework of the project we analyzed the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Slovenia.
